What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing.

The reiki system is based on universal life force energy (also called chi, ki or qui) flowing through us to give us life and good health. If life force energy is low, we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The reiki energy flows through the body along pathways called meridians. A skilled reiki practitioner can use this energy to unblock areas of stagnant energy. Removing the excessive build-up of chi in the body allows the life-force to begin to flow naturally, thus eliminating aches and pains, nourishing vital organs, and allowing the body systems to regulate properly.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. Reiki has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in to benefit from it. Reiki is not dependent on belief, it will work whether you believe in it or not.

What is a typical Distance Reiki session like?

A typical reiki session is between 30 and 90 minutes. Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation so we can go over goals for the appointment, areas of pain or discomfort, medical history (if desired), and lifestyle. Be sure to let me know if you want to avoid or focus on any certain area, chakra(link definition), or emotion. This is your time, so I want to use it in the way that serves you best.

You do not need to undress, just stretch out in a comfortable position. Choose a location that is quiet and relaxing, where no one will interrupt. You may want to play soft music or use candle light.

I begin the reiki energy flow with my intention being to create deep relaxation, help speed healing, reduce pain, balance emotions and the energetic system as a whole. A typical reiki session usually begins at the feet, continues on your legs, and then moves up to the back, abdominal area, chest, neck, and head. I finish with a grounding technique, so that you will feel balanced when the session is complete.

Clients have described reiki as feeling hot, cold, tingly, like a vibration, as effervescence, and as a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around them. Sometimes they don’t actually feel anything they can define, but that doesn’t mean the reiki isn’t flowing. Most people fall into a deep, peaceful state of natural relaxation, almost as if they are on the verge of sleep and some fall into a light peaceful sleep. I have had clients describe having visions, seeing colors, or just feeling floaty.

After the session please take a few moments to integrate.

Take your time getting up. If you sit or stand too quickly you may feel lightheaded or dizzy. This passes quickly if it happens.

How will I feel after a reiki session?

Because a reiki treatment is balancing it can help anyone. Often if you are tired, you’ll feel refreshed. If you arrive anxious, you can leave feeling serene. If you are distressed, you may feel comforted. Where you feel overwhelmed, you might find a renewed sense of yourself. Most people feel like they have had a period of profound deep relaxation, some feel a slower heart rate and easier breathing.

You might not perceive it immediately, but healing has occurred. Maybe you’ll notice it a few days later, when you realize you’re more relaxed and feeling better. Since the changes are happening on an energetic level, it is sometimes seems rather subtle until you really stop to think about it. Most people notice a difference after the first treatment, and the benefits grow with repeated sessions.
