Superfoods That Begin with “U” – Ugli Fruit
Love grapefruit? Crave clementines? Ready for something new? Ugli fruit is a botanical cross between grapefruit, Seville orange and a tangerine which becomes a “tangelo” that looks like grapefruit, but sort of like a tangelo, but bumpier and more lopsided.
Ugli fruit is easy to peel, separates into sections, and is slightly sweeter than grapefruit. In addition, for those instructed by their doctors to stay away from grapefruit because of interactions with certain medicines, Ugli fruit has not been found to contain furanocoumarins.
This delicious treat from Jamaica is available in most major supermarkets from late November through April. Ugli fruit tastes citrusy, sweet and very juicy.
One fruit contains about 90 calories and about 140 percent of the daily recommended value of vitamin C. Ugli fruit contains no fat and no cholesterol. One fruit supplies 4 grams of dietary fiber, 40 milligrams of calcium (for strong bones and teeth), 2 grams of protein (which enables your body to repair and regenerate cells).
Eating citrus fruits on a regular basis might lower your risk of cancer, stroke, hypertension, heart disease and cataracts, according to a 2002 article published in the “Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition.”
